Lavanya Lakshminarayan is the award-winning author of Analog/ Virtual: And Other Simulations of Your Future, featured on Tor.com’s Best Books of 2021 list. She’s a Locus Award finalist and is the first science-fiction writer to win the Times of India AutHer Award and the Valley of Words Award, and she has also been nominated for the BSFA Award.

Her short fiction has appeared in numerous anthologies and magazines, including Someone In Time, The Gollancz Book of South Asian Science Fiction (Vol. 2) and Apex Magazine’s International Futurists Special Issue. Stepping off a long-haul star freighter from Earth, Saras Kaveri has one bag of clothes, her little flying robot Kili … and an invitation to compete in the galaxy’s most watched, most prestigious cooking show. Interstellar MegaChef is the showcase of the planet Primus’s austere, carefully synthesized cuisine. No one from Earth—where they’re so incredibly primitive they still cook with fire—has ever graced its flowmetal cookstations before or smiled awkwardly for its buzzing drone-cams. Until now..!!

Corporate prodigy Serenity Ko, inventor of the smash-hit sim SoundSpace, has just got messily drunk at a floating bar, narrowly escaped an angry mob and been put on two weeks’ mandatory leave to rest and get her work-life balance back. Perfect time to start a new project! And she’s got just the idea: a sim for food. Now she just needs someone to teach her how to cook. A chance meeting in the back of a flying cab has Saras and Serenity Ko working together on a new technology that could change the future of food-and both their lives-forever…

What does this book offer..!?!

When I picked up Interstellar MegaChef, I expected a quirky science-fiction tale, but what I got was so much more—a rich and layered narrative that takes us across the stars while exploring themes of ambition, culture, and identity. Lavanya Lakshminarayan creates a vibrant and complex universe where food becomes a medium to unite diverse beings, challenge societal norms, and spark personal revolutions.

The story centers on Saraswati Kaveri, an Earth refugee with a dream to win the prestigious Interstellar MegaChef competition. Escaping a dying planet, she gets on a journey of reinvention, leaving behind her past to embrace a future filled with interstellar cuisine and stiff competition. Saraswati’s character is immediately relatable, especially her mix of determination and vulnerability. Her culinary journey parallels her internal struggles—seeking belonging, grappling with prejudices, and asserting her identity in a world vastly different from Earth.

Lavanya’s world-building is stunning. From the intricacies of Primus’s shifting, flowmetal megacity, Uru, to the interplay of cultures and species that inhabit it, every detail feels meticulously crafted. The Nakshatran values of harmony and sustainability juxtaposed against humanity’s flaws create a thoughtful backdrop for the story. The vivid descriptions of alien ingredients, futuristic cooking techniques, and mouthwatering dishes make you feel like you’re part of the interstellar dining experience.

My take..!!!

What stood out most for me was how the book uses food as a lens to explore deeper issues. The interplanetary cuisines reflect the histories and traditions of their creators, showcasing how food is a universal language that bridges divides yet also highlights inequalities. Saraswati’s journey in the competition becomes a commentary on privilege, cultural appropriation, and the challenges faced by immigrants trying to carve a space for themselves in a system stacked against them.

Critique Comment..!!!

The book’s pacing sometimes feels uneven. Certain parts, like Saraswati’s backstory, could have been explored more deeply, while some subplots meandered without clear resolution. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise captivating tale.

The narrative is also peppered with humor, poignant moments, and delightful secondary characters. Kili, Saraswati’s sentient Winger, adds charm and comic relief, while figures like Starlight Fantastic, an E’nemon traveler, provide glimpses into the richness of inter-species dynamics.

Interstellar MegaChef is a feast for the imagination and a celebration of resilience and creativity. Whether you’re a science fiction fan, a foodie, or someone who loves a good underdog story, this book will satisfy your appetite and leave you hungry for more.
