Śrīmad Bhagavadgītā, a 700-verse shloka series set within the Indian epic Mahabharata, where Lord Krishna imparts spiritual wisdom and guidance to Arjuna, who is reluctant to fight in a war against his consanguinity.

The Bhagavad Gita [श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता] is not a standalone book; it is set within the larger Indian epic. It was a conversation between Krishna and Arjuna, set amidst a battlefield, to resolve profound questions about duty, ethics, and the meaning of life. While there are ample reiterates, resays, and “as is” versions available in the market, “Wisdom Tales from GITA” By Deepak Bharwani is a unique attempt to share Knowledge of Bhagawan Krishna’s GITA through a charming weave of distinctive animals.

The captivating story is set in Lalavan, an enchanting forest at the foothills of the majestic Himalayas, where Narasimha(the regal lion)resides in his Simhavaasam cave alongside Lioness Chenchu and their playful cub, little Nara. The author selects twenty shlokas from sacred Bhagavad Gita and weaves them into captivating stories on Lalavan’s residents, Kiddo Nara (the cub) and his friends — Pipa (the parrot), Jugs (the elephant), Saaka (the Sarpa), Zundo (the hippy), Tantra (the tortoise), Zoey (the Hiranya), and Kapa (the monkey) — along with many visiting animals and other familiar species, thus concluding each tale with the corresponding shloka’s translations.

Adhering to Bhagawan Shri Krishna’s timeless aphorisms, this book teaches kids simple and practical lessons about how to live a good life—by being honest, kind, and inspiring. The author has commendably chosen an engaging narrative style that captures the attention of younger readers as well as parents, serving both as a learning aid and a thought-provoking bedtime story.

For the enlightenment of Gen Z and Gen Alpha, this book successfully addresses the complexity and depth often found in traditional “as is” versions of the Bhagavad Gita, making profound wisdom accessible. Deepak Bharwani’s approach should serve as a reference for anyone looking to narrate complex themes in a simple, unembellished, and relatable way.

My only quibble with this book is the use of pages. While there was ample opportunity to utilize the space more effectively, approximately 20% of the pages could potentially have been conserved. Additionally, the end of each chapter—where the respective GITA shloka is presented—could have included further elaboration or commentary. This would have been a valuable addition, especially since many pages were intentionally left blank.

My special praise goes to Natalia Nikonova for the beautiful illustrations and Tausif Ali Khan for the graphic designs, along with the respective team members who equally contributed to the success of this fabulous book.

I sincerely hope Deepak brings out the next set of GITA wisdom with a fresh theme—preferably one that contemplates the experiences of youngsters—and continues to help readers enjoy the timeless lessons of the Bhagavad Gita through engaging and consummate folklore.
