My Preamble…!!!
Quadragenarian Pawan Kumar Marella is an employee of Unilever, one of the world’s leading consumer packaged goods companies, headquartered in London. Spending twenty years and beyond in the cosmos of sales, marketing, and strategy, Pawan crafted a pragmatic repertoire dexterously for the young professionals who ambitiously enter the world of corporate.

‘Dear Rookie, Don’t Panic’ is a cornucopia of life lessons for newcomers, supplying the impetus to enthrall in their respective career paths. After crossing the phase of ‘Rookie’, we IT professionals always regret those aspects that went wrong and eventually taught us a life lesson. However, Pawan, through this boo,k made the Rookie’s life easy by amassing ubiquitous perturbs, conventional concerns, and much more.
What to expect from this book?
Spread across three layers of vitalizing triumph promenade to the Rookie, Pawan’s way of segregating as “You Vs You“, “You and Others“, and “Future You“, caters to every rookie asking to prepare himself/herself to face the corporate jungle and parade towards efficacious ascendancy. He emphasizes the need for a paradigm shift, self-expression, personal branding, building up competence, learning tendency, the art of saying NO, adaptability, open-mindedness, contextual reflex, thoughtfulness, and so on.
Book Emphasis..!!!
Pawan unveils the teamwork dynamics viz., ideations, personal touch, decision making, and trust that can enable the entire TEAM to march towards success. He shares experiences from his own life, illustrating how tenacity and adaptability can lead to personal and professional fulfillment.
The motifs of self-awareness, goal setting, handling setbacks, and maintaining mental well-being are woven throughout this manual. Through his engaging writing style, Pawan offers a bunch of practical advice, personal anecdotes, and philosophical insights that resonate with readers(Rookie) facing dubiety and challenges.

Key Takeaways..!!
Three takeaways from this book for me to take and resonate in both personal and professional facades. Though this isn’t any new subject matter to readers, I appreciate how Pawan put up this point in his own words to present it compelling and provocatively.
- Be a Radiator, Not a Vacuum Cleaner.
- Saying the Right Things, the Right Way.
- Do First, Talk Later.

These are undeniable success mantras that everyone should inculcate in their respective career growth blueprints. Also, I should appreciate the concept of cherishing small wins, acknowledging tough times, and keeping up the true spirits and high momentum. Not limited to the Rookie clause this book pumps inspiration and guiding light for the first-time leader and for those who step into the newly promoted roles and to make them futuristic cum visionary leaders.
Is this book a value add to readers?
Mr. Marella addresses the most common Rookie questions in this book. A few of those questions that I would like to highlight are:
- How to learn from the mistakes we make?
- How to make things right when everything goes wrong.
- What to deduce from failure and how to bounce back.
- How not to control everything and to choose fast learning.
My Pick(s)..!!
Out of all the aspects Pawan presented, for me, “The Standouts” in this book are: In-depth analysis of Email etiquette, and Meeting etiquette. I do remember those tough days when I lacked online resources or my superior’s advice, and often ended up as my manager’s topic of target in my routine 1X1 vitriolic sermons. The author’s perusal of the above-mentioned topics is are boon to the Rookie who reads this book and prepares themselves to be free from guilt and embarrassment.

What can be improved..!!
Though Pawan justifies his book as Rookie-centric, I wish he could have imbibed additional topics for the benefit of professionals who are already well-established in the IT world and lack those essential skills. This book goes like a classical academic textbook flow, at times I felt like reading engineering course curricula. I wish Pawan had spiced the book by including illustrations or effigy personas and thereby enabled a free-flow reading experience.
End Note..!!!
A useful guide for recent college out, early-career individuals, or anyone facing new challenges, the book leaves its readers with a sense of hope and empowerment. I am sure this is a one-stop handy guide to those who are being lost in the ocean of internet knowledge to prepare themselves to face the corporate world.
Pawan Kumar Marella’s “Dear Rookie, Don’t Panic” is a commendable and encouraging read that combines personal wisdom with practical advice. It serves as a gentle reminder that life’s uncertainties are universal and that maintaining a positive attitude and persistent effort can help navigate them successfully.
Conclusion..!!
If you are a Rookie seeking a motivational companion to bolster your confidence and provide guiding principles during uncertain times, this book is a must-read. To start off with Unilever, I personally recommend this book to be included in the “Induction Kit” along with company-branded goodies offered to every Rookie who joins afresh, plus it deserves a place in respective corporate libraries and resource shelves of L&K branchlets.
