Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as sugar disease, is a chronic metabolic disorder in which blood glucose levels (blood sugar) rise abnormally high because the body either cannot produce enough insulin or is unable to use the insulin it produces effectively. The word insulin comes from the Latin word insula, which means "island."
